Back From Tanzawa Weekend

Sengataki Trail

It was a rough hike deep into the mountains, and once I arrived, I realized that my return route and overall planning was weak. I thought to myself at the end of the first day, "If it was this rough climbing up and down mountains along the range to get here. Then it'll be just as rough getting out." So next the though of what to do came over me. I opted to climb the last biggest mountain in Tanzawa, Hinokihoramaru, then descend to civilization from there. Will post some photos over the next couple days.

This photo, however, is from the day hike in Nagano last Monday. This hike was mostly in the rain, so did not get as many photos, but the greens are luscious.

If you have a question about hiking in Japan or Japan in general, please post.

is it possible to do the whole of the Tanzawa range in one day or is it necessary to spend a night there?

It's a good idea to plan on spending the night if you want to go all the way across and spend some decent time enjoying sights. However, I have gone up light, climbing Tonodake, then trekking on across to Tanzawa-san, and down toward Sagami. That took 12 hours plus and you don't see Fudonomine (nice views), the Oni rocks, and Hirugatake (the tallest in Kanagawa).

A good day hike is Oyama-san, but go straight up without the cable car, then come down on the trail that runs west to southwest.

If you decide to spend the night, one of my favorite hikes is to climb straight up Tonodake from the South, have lunch on top (and get some water by descending about ten minutes down the west), then go on to Tanzawa-san and Fudonomine. At Fudonomine there is a great place to pitch a tent. The next day is on to Hirugatake, then west toward Hinokiboramaru, then down to the Nishi Tanzawa Shizen Kyoushitsu.

Some long hikes, but it covers the brunt of Tanzawa.
